Knowledgeable reloaders advice Please?
I need some help. I am in the market for a reloader and have been looking at the Dillon 550 and 650. A lot of people say to go with the 550 but I really don't understand why? My thinking is the 650 is more so it must be better, but evidently not so. Can you explain the difference between the two in elementary terms.
Also, I have been offered a 650 set up for 9mm,45,45ACP,357,40,38..tumbler, brass feeder, and everything else on his bench (scale, tools, 5lbs gun powder,2000 primers, brass, etc etc..) for $1000... Is this a good deal?
FYI: I will be reloading 9mm,40,45,-mainly. and 223 occasionally but not important.
Thanks for your help.
when i say set up for 9mm,45 etc i mean he has the dies and hardware
Any Dillon press is good equipment, but as one answerer mentioned....the 650 is AUTO INDEXING, and the 550 is not.
Have you ever seen what a gun looks like after it has blown up from an over loaded cartridge? Or a bullet stuck in the barrel and another cartridge trying to launch a round behind it?
The auto indexing part of the 650 will make it next to impossible (you would have to try really hard) to throw a double charge, or to miss a powder charge.
Also, one of the other things that I like about my 650 is that it seats the primers on the upstroke....making it easier to "feel" what is going on when you push the primer in.
Obviously, I have a 650. I have loaded probably 40 to 50 thousand rounds through it. For pistol cartridges, I think you will be MUCH happier with the 650, but it will have a little more intricacies to learn about.
