When do Whitetail Deer Shed their Antlers? ?
I live in New York and was out searching for Whitetail sheds this morning. My husband and I found plenty of trails, hoofprints, rubs, and deer poop, but no sheds. Are we too early?
When do whitetails start dropping their antlers?
Thanks!
I used to live in western NY and saw deer that still had antlers in March. I've also found a freshly dropped (still blood on the base) antler a few days after Thanksgiving one year. It depends on the deers overall health, food availability etc. when they drop their antlers. Most of the deer should be drooping soon if not already. You can make an "antler trap". Put 3 rods in the ground in a triangle with about 2 feet sticking up out of the ground. Then run chicken wirefrom one post, around the second post and hook it to the third. Kind of a V shape. Then place corn or some kind of food in the V. When the deer come to feed, they will have to enter between the 2 posts with the opening. If their antlers are starting to loosen, as they rub against the chicken wire they will fall off. Takes some of the thrill out of finding them but it works great. Also, the sooner you find them the better. Mice, squirrels and other rodents love to chew on them. Good luck hunting sheds.
