What are some of the things a person should look for in ear protection for the shooting range?
My son took me to a inside target range the other day. We had ear plugs and it was still too loud. It noise made me feel uncomfortable and I was afraid of losing my hearing. The ear protection that I have looked at says that it will reduce the level of sound down to 85 db; that sounds like it is still too loud. What is your opinion?
If you value your hearing, some of the best hearing protection is the Peltor Tactical 6S or 7S. Both are designed to suppress sound levels to a maximum of 82 dB while still allowing normal conversation with people next to you.
While doing practice for competition or testing work, I often times spend the entire day on the range and wearing devices like these allows me to leave them on all day and talk to and listen to people next to me. I get so used to wearing them, that it would not be uncommon to start driving home and realize I still have them on when I look in the review mirror.
Yes, they do cost $80-$120, but that is a small investment to protect one of our most important senses.
