is the mossburg model 590 special purpose 9 shot shotgun with the heat shield and the extra shell holder in the stock a good gun for defense?

Yes, a great gun for home defense...
It has a longer magazine tube than the mossberg 500, which holds more shells.
Most people prefer to use pump guns because of their reliabilty. The heatshield however is more "tacticool" than anything. In a home defense situation you won't be firing enough to heat that barrel up to any extent.
