Sighted in with Federal Premium, bought Hornady. Will my zero hold?
I sighted in my Remington 700 BDL .270 Winchester two months ago with Federal-Premium 130-Grain Soft Point ammunition. Without thinking carefully, I bought some Hornady 130-Grain Inter-bond cartridges. With a hunting trip coming up on Friday, I have no time to re-zero my rifle with the Hornady Loads. Should I tough it out and use the Federal Premium soft points? Or will my zero not change because of the same bullet-weight? If it does change, by how much will it? Thanks Everyone.
The chances of factory ammo from two different companies using two different bullet types and two different powders hitting the same Point of Impact are slim. You could be shooting near MOA with the Federals and be off 3 or 4 inches at 100 yards in any direction with the Hornady cartridges, and maybe still getting near MOA (or not even close)-just depends on the rifle and the loads. With reloading,I've seen changes of 0.4 or less of same powder open up groups by inches, and even shift POI.If you take two different powder formulas you would be guessing how much change there would be. The other factor in this is that even as both companies load to the SAAMI spec, the COL or ogive position of the bullet profile will change and throw you accuracy between the two types. Given the choice, I would go with the Feds for now,at least you know WHERE they should hit,and in most cases a soft point shouldn't fail to perform on deer. I do recommend Bonded Core bullets or controlled expansion types, like the InterBonds, but because you don't have time to sight in again, use the Feds. If this were for elk or bear,I would suggest MAKING THE TIME to sight in with the InterBonds. What I have noticed with reloading is that sometimes the actual bullet maker has little effect on accuracy. I can use Sierra Game Kings for practice and use Nosler Accu-bonds for hunting-I do have to adjust the COL for each, but either give me sub MOA accuracy in my 30-06 using same powder load. My 300 WSM isn't as forgiving-I got it shooting Barnes TSXs sub MOA,but those are dang expensive to practice with!
