SKS Sights and Ballistics / Deer Hunting?
I have a 1954 Russian SKS. It is completely original and unmodified. It has an adjustable open sight numbered 0 - 10. Are those supposed to be 100 yard increments or what? I plan on going deer hunting and I want to be in the know. Also, supposing I judge the distance accurately and adjust the sights accordingly, does anyone know if this will fully compensate for the drop in the bullet trajectory at a given distance? Any knowledge will be appreciated. Also, I plan on using this deer as a learning experience for tanning, which I have never done, does anyone know of a really good website that explains the steps and process of tanning techniques ( I just want to make buckskin, I don't want a pelt). I also want to hear some of your opinions on which deer to shoot... Buck or Doe. Younger or Older. I am new to this and I am eager to learn. THANKS.
The 7.62X39MM cartridge is more than adequate for deer.... It has the required 1000 foot pounds of energy to 150 yards to take White Tail Deer..... The sites on an SKS are in meters and it is in 100 meter increments..... This is kind of a joke because the 7.62X39MM is NOT a long range cartridge... In my CZ 527 bolt action chambered in 7.62x39MM its accurate to 200 yards and after that has too much drop......
This is basically a short range cartridge...... In the SKS it is more than adequate for to deer with shots no more than 100 yards in my opinion.... The SKS although a fine rifle is not the most accurate rifle out there.... Its decent for close range deer shots -- forget any long range shots....
Of course use soft point hunting ammunition (SP) -- Not FMJ that is commonly used in these SKS and AK type rifles....
