Is there a Colt pistol with a .40 Caliber called the Peacemaker?
Stephen King, in the seventh book in the Dark Tower series, mentions a character using a .40 Colt Peacemaker. I always thought the Peacemaker was a .45 Caliber Single Action Army. Did King mess up? Or is there such a gun?
I've never seen one, and doubt it exists. .40 caliber is a semi-auto, rimless cartridge and couldn't be used in a revolver without something called half-moon clips.
King, while I am a big fan, knows absolutely nothing about firearms and his editorial staff is completely worthless in that regard. If you ever read Needful Things, pay close attention as he describes a handgun. In the space of a few hours, it seems to morph from a revolver to a semi-auto and then perhaps back again. It slides ,,, it revolves ... it has a safety .. or not ...I don't remember the exact sequence, but made some notes in the margins as I went along, trying to figure out what the heck he was talking about. I finally figured out that no one who had ever handled firearms had any part in the writing or editing.
While I don't blame him for being basically ignorant of firearms -- he seems a bit left-wingish anyhow -- there's no excuse for the clowns he hires not taking even a few minutes to keep King from looking like an idiot in print. Frankly, like most of the mincers in the publishing business I think they dislike guns and just are not interested in being accurate. No pride of workmanship anymore, I guess.
All these idiots would have to do is call up some guy who has actually handled a few guns and make him an offer: Hey, read these galley proofs of King's next best-seller and make sure the gun parts I marked make sense. We'll get you an autographed copy when it's published. People would be standing in line to fix his mistakes, or suggest improvements.
But of course you'd have to find an editor with half a brain, first. Most of them can barely get the spelling and punctuation correct, and good luck with the subject & verb agreeing!
There's always been a rumor going around that King is more of an idea man nowadays, and that a team of unknown, well-paid writers actually do the writing from his outlines & guidance. Don't know whether it's true, but it would explain a few things.
Still, if his name's on the cover, you'd think he'd have enough pride of authorship to get some competent editorial assistants and fact-checkers.
