Momentum Physics Problem 10 Points!!!!?
A cannon is mounted on a railway flatcar, the muzzle elevated to 25.8° and pointed in the direction of the track. The cannon fires a 0.80-metric-ton projectile at 0.90 km/s.
(a) If the flatcar and cannon together have a mass of 36.0 metric tons (not including the projectile), what is the initial recoil speed of the flatcar?
_____ m/s
(b) In this problem, it appears that momentum in the y-direction is not conserved. Explain what happens to it.
I tried doing this but keep getting the wrong answer. Please show work at how to arrive at the correct answer. Thanks guys
In the x direction m*v*cos(25.8) = M*V
So V = m*v*cos(25.8)/M = 0.80*900m/s*cos(25.8)/36.0 = 18.0m/s
b) In the y direction, the Earth applies a force to the flatcar which results in an impulse which reduces the y momentum to 0
