Is the AR-15 platform the future of hunting?
History has proven that hunters and sportsmen are using rifles for hunting that were once used by the militaries of the past. I have seen people hunting deer with a scoped Mauser 98k, surplus Lee-Enfield .303, 1903 Springfields, Mosin Nagants, and even scoped SKS rifles. Most bolt actions of today still use the Mauser style action.
Soldiers who come from the battlefields and return to civilian life, sometimes will hunt with the same firearms they used during war.
The AR-15 family variants is very big, AR's are being made not just in .223, but in .204 Ruger, .308 Win, .300 Rem UltraMag, 6.8 Spc, 6.5 Grendel, .450 Bushmaster, .22 lr, 9 x 19 parabellum, and even in .45 acp. Remington decided to jump into the AR-15 manufacturing business, and the CEO of Remington said that the AR platform is the future of hunting and that is why his company is heading in that direction. What do you think about this? Is the AR platform the future of hunting rifles?
MAybe not the AR15 specificaly but definately the AR platform. In the past 5yrs or so there has been to many new calibers to count. There are even AR10's shooting 30-06 now. Thats amazing. And you can get the .450 socom for killing about anything that breathes out to 250yds or so and you can even get bolt action 50 caliber BMG uppers (yes BMG!) that allow serious knock down power out to 1mile or so. The platform has definately taken off recently. The 50AE would kill anything that breathes out to 100yds for sure.
Now using a regular .223 AR15 or even a 6.5grendal or 6.8spc which is easy to get and equaly priced would limit you to smaller game like coyotes, deer, etc. The AR10 platform can be configured to kill everything else. Accuracy and reliability is not cheap but it can definately be had.
Bolt action rifles will always be more accurate, more reliable, and much more precise though. Don't ever forget that. So I see AR's taking over certain types of hunting but definately not all aspects of it.
