Is it possible to install a collapsible or A2 style buttstock on a .223 pistol?
Thinking of buying a .223 handgun and installing a butt stock. Wondering about the legality of said modification, and if it's even possible. Never owned one, but seen em at gun shows, gun shops, and on CTD. Doesn't make sense that it would be legal to install a butt stock on it as, correct me if i'm wrong, but owning a RIFLE of similar design with a barrel any shorter than 16.5in requires special permits/licenses... is this illegal, or just a loophole that I've never noticed? Because essentially, a .223 pistol + tactical butt stock = badass little AR15 styled SMG...
Prior to putting a stock on it, you would have to fill out your form 4, write a check for $200, wait about 90 days for the BATF to get back to you, engrave your lower receiver, and you would have a registered SBR that must be secured without anyone else being allowed to have access to it unless you were present. Or you could go the trust route. Either way it must be registered as an SBR. No grips on the forearm, no stock on the pistol or you are illegal without registration as an SBR. Otherwise keep your barrel (with permantly fixed muzzle attachement) over 16 inches and shotgun barrels over 18 inches and you should be good. A good substitute would be a 14.5 inch barrel and a 1.5 inch flash hider with a weld on it. Otherwise pay your money and go to 7.5-12.5 inches. 223 loses a lot of damaging capability as the barrel gets shorter though.
