Which scope would be best suited for my K98 Mauser?
I recently installed a weaver mount in place of the rear iron sight and am having a hard time figuring out what scope to mount due to lack of experience. I am looking for a Long Eye Relief Scope (I suppose a Handgun scope) because of the aprox. 1.5' dist. between my eye and the mount. My budget dictates the best bang for my buck in the 50-250 $ range. I have not purchased any scope rings either, any suggestions on those? Thanks for the help.
Yeah, real helpful, if you have no clue don't answer. Nitro your a real soup sandwich.
The best scope for your application might be one that is typical in length to one used on the AR-15 rifles. Less than 10 inches in length.
The main consideration is the ability to load the rifle and safely eject the cases. If you plan on shooting the rifle at distances greater than 100 yards then you can buy one that has the little circles below the horizontal crosshair so that after you zero it at 100 yards the only thing you have to do is hold the crosshair over the target on one of the little dots or circles for the designated range which means you would have to "shoot" the target with a laser range finder.
They sell "mil-dot" scopes that would work well but the idea behind a mil-dot scope is that you judge you distance to the target by knowing approximately how tall it is, like 3 feet or 6 feet tall, and how many "mils" tall it is when you look at it through the scope and count how many mils tall it is. Then you divide (? I forget and I'm away from my sniper handbook) the mils by the the height of the target in yards to get the distance. (Like 5 mils divided by 1.5 yards = 350 yards or 6 mils divided by 2 yards (or a six foot man) = 300 yards distance. But then you have to create your own tables for one specific ammunition and make adjustments to your elevation after determining the distance. Every bullet weight has to have a different set of tables.
Anyway, the length of the scope is critical so you can load the rifle, the distance from the rear lens to your eye is critical and should be about three inches so you don't split your brow when the rifle recoils.
Check the list of scopes the they sell at The Sportsman's Guide and I'm sure you'll find on that looks right and then order some rings that are for a weaver base and the right diameter for the scope tube.
You can lay a ruler on top of the rifle to estimate scope length, eye rrelief, and whether or not you can load the rifle with a certain length scope in place. You might have to look for a pistol scope if your reported eye relief is 12 inches or 1.5 feet as you mentioned above. Might check out the web sites that sell various Mauser parts to see if you can find a different gadget to mount the scope on as with the Mauser sniper rifles.
Good Luck!
