Can a male whitetail deer get so old that he quits growing antlers? If so, how old would that be?
There was a buck taken on our property this year that had no antlers. There were depressions in the skull where the antlers should have been. The deer was taken during the rut. It was a very old deer, there hair around the muzzel and throat were grey. It was a large bodied deer, appeared to be in good health (lots of fat reserves). So, I wondered if it was because of age that he had no antlers?
I do a tremendous amount of reading major studies done on almost every aspect of a deer's life. The studies on age and antlers say the antler's will go downhill after the deer gets too much past his prime. But he will still have antlers every year. My best guess would be that the deer had shed his antlers a little early.
