Whitetail Deer Hunt
Favorite way to hunt whitetail deer?

I enjoy hunting whitetail deer very much and i was just wondering what type of hunting people favor for whitetail. I want to know if people like hunting deer best with compound bows, recurves, rifles, muzzleloaders, or shotguns and tell me why. My favorite way to hunt deer is with a compound bow because i think its more challenging and fun and you get the chance to shoot the monsters first.

Hands down, the bow. I shoot a compound, and it is incredibly challenging. That said, I got three bucks in my first three years with a bow when I was 14,15 and 16. They were a spike, a forkhorn, and then a huge 8pter. Since then, I had only gotten one other deer; when I was 19 I got a doe with a shotgun. I'm 24 now, and I just ended a 5 year deer-less streak and an 8 yr bowless streak. This November, I got a 4pter with my bow on state land. I got a doe during the shotgun season too. So this year, I got a deer both ways.

I love the bow season because the weather is awesome up here in Western New York. It's chilly, but not freezing. The leaves are all down. And like you said, the bow season here in NY comes before any of the gun seasons - so we get first crack at the animals. Also, the bow season here falls smack in the middle of the rut. So the action is at is best, and there's less pressure - so the deer are less likely to be nocturnal. I always compared gun season to a firing squad, moreso than hunting. THe deer are running for their lives, not existing as they normally do in the woods. That's why bow season is so much better. Their daily patterns are much more natural, and its quieter in the woods. I can sit in my portable tree stand for 12hrs and just take in the cool, 35 degree air...and I can see for great distances with all the leaves down. I don't even need to see deer to be relaxed and happy; they're just a bonus.
